Mikhail Baryshnikov and Jessica Hecht in Chekhov Click here for tickets The Orchard, a hybrid production for in-person audiences and virtual theatregoers, starts this week in New York. It is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's great play The Cherry Orchard by Ukrainian-born theatre director Igor Golyak. It stars Jessica Hecht as Ranevskaya and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who will play both Anton Chekhov and Firs, and Juliet Brett as Anya. Audiences in the theatre will enter an immersive environment where perceptions, illusions, and reality collide as a family in crisis tries to process their future. The virtual experience invites audiences on a journey through a three-dimensional property that has been abandoned and is in foreclosure. Audiences can explore magical rooms where they uncover echoes of a past life, including Chekhov's letters, memories, and, ultimately, the play, live, in progress at the Baryshnikov Arts Center Off-Broadway. The in-person and online versions will run concurrently for each performance. Partway through the performances, the two versions intersect and the worlds come together. “This is a story about the delicate relationships at the center of a family facing the end of the world as they know it,” says Golyak. “We are living through an unimaginable time of change and destruction with the war in Ukraine and with the pandemic. As humans, we are perpetually losing our cherry orchards, losing our worlds. This play is about us today." Previews will begin Off-Broadway at The Baryshnikov Arts Center May 31. Cocktails With a Curator – St Francis in the Desert Click here to watch I have been missing the Frick’s Cocktails With a Curator series since the Frick decided the pandemic was over and the two curators Xavier F. Salomon and Aimee Ng, who presented the videos from the beginning, moved onto other projects. However, since the entire wonderful quirky series is still available on YouTube, I decided to go back and watch some of the earliest episodes. Here is the very first, aired on April 10, 2020, when the first lockdown had just started with all the shocking suddenness of change and even museum curators had to work from home. In this episode, Xavier Salomon hosts us for happy hour at his Manhattan apartment to talk about the Frick's most famous and beloved painting "St. Francis in the Desert," by Giovanni Bellini, and the cocktail he suggests to drink with it is the Manhattan. In a scant ten minutes, we get the background to the painting, to the artist, to the context, to St Francis himself, and to the details of this masterwork that a mere casual viewer would be hardly likely to see without guidance. After just this one episode, I was an addict. After this first episode, there followed some 70 more, each focusing on a single work of ark. I have learned more about art history during the pandemic than I ever knew before and much of it came from these lovely Frick videos. L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato – Mark Morris Dance Group Click here for tickets With all the success that Mark Morris has earned in the past 30 years for his innovative, carefully crafted and totally original ballets, this one is still my favourite. I hadn’t seen it for a long time, his newer works tending to be performed more often, so I screened it this week and fell in love with it anew. It hasn’t dated in any particular, if anything, its details and choreographic delights are even more meaningful today. Choreographer Mark Morris garnered international fame for his landmark work L'Allegro, il Pensaroso et il Moderato, set to Handel's Baroque masterpiece, in which a colorful array of dancers embody the ecstasy of art that transforms. "L'Allegro" was Mark Morris's premiere work as Director of Dance at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium in 1988, and in the intervening years, has been performed to critical and audience acclaim all over the world. Winner of numerous awards including a Laurence Olivier Award, "L'Allegro" uses Milton's text and features sets inspired by William Blake's later watercolors. Founded in NYC in 1980, the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) is considered one of the preeminent modern dance companies, its members praised repeatedly for their technique and musicality. This performance was filmed July 2014 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain. The music is by George Frideric Handel. The soloists are Sarah-Jane Brandon, Elizabeth Watts, James Gilchrist and Andrew Foster-Williams with the whole Mark Morris Dance Group. Irresistible. Trouble in Mind – National Theatre Click here for tickets Trouble in Mind by actress and playwright Alice Childress is a radical satire of racism in theatre set in 1950s America. Tanya Moodie gives a blistering performance as Wiletta Mayer, an experienced Black actress who is tired of playing maids and is cast in a new play about racism – written and directed by two white men. When she objects to the way the story is being told, sparks fly. There is nothing dated about Nancy Medina’s timely National Theatre revival of a play written at the start of the civil rights movement when protests for racial equality erupted in the face of voter suppression. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Raul Esparza Click here to watch I wrote last week about Miscast, the wonderful annual event in which star performers sing songs from roles in which they would never be cast. I mentioned that one of my favourite moments from last year’s show was I Have A Love, Maria and Anita’s duet from West Side Story. In the show, of course, it’s sung by two women, and, no matter how bizarre the casting, there’s no chance that two of our top musical theatre men would ever get the opportunity to sing this wonderful song by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. If you haven’t yet chased it down on YouTube, you should have the chance to see it. So here it is, from Miscast21, performed by Lin Manuel Miranda and Raul Esparza, two men in business suits, no drag, no makeup, no dresses, but inhabiting their female characters fully. At the start the audience assumes they're playing it for laughs but, as the song unfolds, it becomes clear that they're singing it as sincerely and sweetly as only two great stars can. Even if they’re men.
