Bloody Difficult Women – Wind of Change Click here for tickets This is an on demand streaming of journalist Tim Walker's new play Bloody Difficult Women. The drama sees the tumultuous political events of recent years played out in a power struggle between two determined women. It is inspired by the successful court case business woman Gina Miller brought against Prime Minister Theresa May in 2016, an action aimed at upholding the sovereignty of the UK parliament, and has a final climatic scene set in the present. Walker’s intensely human account makes for revealing and often very funny theatre, but ultimately, it's a tragedy, where there are no winners, only losers. It brings the story up to date in a dramatic finale which says so much about the deep divisions we still have in the UK. The production is directed by Stephen Unwin and stars Calum Finlay, Amara Karam as Gina Miller, Edmund Kingsley, Graham Seed, Jessica Turner as Theresa May, and Andrew Woodall as tabloid newspaper editor Paul Dacre. 8 Apr- 3 May £15 Ballet Coast to Coast – Jacob’s Pillow Click here to watch These are 20 short ballets from the archive of the beautiful Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts. The first three entries are from a program with the same title as this playlist, and all share the distinction of representing U.S. ballet companies from outside New York City. John Wilson’s Summer Delights Click here for tickets Here’s a delightful concert from City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by wonderful John Wilson. There’s only one John Wilson – and CBSO regulars don’t need telling that there isn’t a conductor alive who can handle British light music with more elegance, wit and style. Haydn Wood strolls through Edwardian London and Eric Coates takes Cinderella to a distinctly jazz-age ball. Frederick Delius drifts gently into the sunset, Sullivan flies away with the fairies, and of course there’s something very special indeed from local boy, Sir Edward Elgar. It’s all about the melodies: tunes you know, tunes you remember, and one or two that you think you don’t (but definitely do). You’ll be humming them for some time to come! Treasures of New York: The Frick Collection Click here to watch The Frick Museum in New York is my favourite museum in the world. I’ve often shared with you short videos from the curators about specific works of art, which are always worth watching. The series, Cocktails with a Curator, is a model of its kind and many of these videos, made during the pandemic, are still available on the Frick website and highly recommended. This is different. It’s a sort of travelogue, made for PBS, which takes you on an intimate, behind-the-scenes tour of this Gilded Age house museum dedicated to Old Master paintings, notable bronzes, sculpture, and the decorative arts. The film explores the excellence in taste and preservation of these works, the family behind the collection, and the institution’s history and dedication to art scholarship. There are some interesting insights from the curators and others associated with the Museum and, of course, a glimpse of many of the artworks themselves. Now, while the Frick mansion is being renovated, the museum has taken over another building, known as Frick Madison, to dislay its art. Those who have seen it and are familiar with the original collection have talked about how different it looks in another setting. That’s one of the treats I’m looking forward to on my next NY visit. Seven methods of killing kylie jenner – Royal Court Theatre Click here for tickets Following the successes of its sold-out 2019 premiere and subsequent run in 2021, this award-winning play is now available to stream worldwide for three weeks only. seven methods of killing kylie jenner (not me being eccentric, this is how the Royal Court, and presumably the playwright, fails to capitalise the title) explores cultural appropriation, queerness, friendship and the ownership of black bodies online and IRL. Holed up in her bedroom, Cleo’s aired twenty-two WhatsApps from Kara and has cut off contact with the rest of the world. It doesn’t mean she’s been silent though – she’s got a lot to say. On the internet, actions don’t always speak louder than words… Jasmine Lee-Jones won multiple awards for this, her debut play. It was directed by Milli Bhatia and won the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Most Promising Playwright Awards, and the Alfred Fagon Award. She originally developed as a writer through the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Court programme as part of their commitment to nurturing new voices. Milli Bhatia was previously Trainee Director at the Royal Court, and is now an Associate Director. We are warned that this production contains use of racial slurs and mentions of sexual violence. seven methods of killing kylie jenner was originally part of the Royal Court’s Jerwood New Playwrights programme. The Guardian’ critic called it, "Unmissable and exhilarating." 27 March – 17 April £10 for a 48-hour rental. Aspen Armchair Concerts Click here to watch Two more lovely chamber music concerts from the Aspen Music Festival and School this week. On April 11, this coming Monday, pianist Orion Weiss will be playing Bach’s fiendishly difficult Goldberg Variations. On Tuesday, we’re promised a variety of saxophone music with Samuel Williams. In 2013 and 2014, Sam was awarded the Saxophone Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival, where he appeared with various orchestras and chamber ensembles, presented a solo recital, and performed several U.S. and world premieres. Sam continues to perform annually at the Aspen Music Festival as a first-call chamber and orchestral saxophonist. These concerts are free to watch. They will initially stream at 6 pm MST on the given date but don’t worry if you’re not living in the Rockies, they will remain available to view for three days following the live stream. Apr.11 and Apr. 12 at 6pm Mountain Standard Time Prayer For Ukraine Click here to watch I have received a number of versions of this Prayer for Ukraine, written in 1885 by Oleksandr Konysky (words) and Mykola Lysenko (music). This is one of the simplest and best. It is by the Caritas Choir who perform it here in Wales’ Llandaff Cathedral. The setting is by Lindsay Gray, a former director of the Royal School of Church Music. There are times when all you can do it pray. This may be one of them.
