La Clemenza di Tito – Glyndebourne Opera Click here to watch There is never a bad time to listen to Mozart but some occasions are better than others and, perhaps, in this time of uncertainty, we should remind ourselves that his gifts to us, his audience, are unending. This opera, his last, is not often performed – it’s not Don Giovanni or The Magic Flute – but it contains some of Mozart’s most ravishing music and, therefore, the most ravishing music ever created for the opera stage. Perhaps we are less familiar with La Clemenza di Tito, the story of the Roman Emperor Titus and his remarkable mercy to his friends, even when they set fire to his Capitol and try to kill him. Richard Croft sings the title role, Anna Stéphany is a wonderful Sesto, Michele Losier’s Annio is delicate and elegant, and Alice Coote’s Vitalia is a fabulous scheming villain in terrific voice. If you look carefully at this cast list you will notice that two of the main male roles are sung by mezzo sopranos (Mozart’s love of castrati makes those roles quite hard to cast today) and, of course, the female mezzo soprano role is a mezzo too. All women. Confused yet? Glyndebourne could hardly have bettered the cast in this 2017 production. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Robin Ticciati brings out the sheer beauty of Mozart's score. Director Claus Guth sets Mozart's final opera in a rather stark modern-dress production, his vision of the 1st-Century Roman story is set in a two-storey office suite bureaucracy. You may argue with the harsh setting and the post-modern film projections, but I promise you can’t fault the singing or the acting of this glorious opera. This Clemenza is a masterpiece well served. Many events recommended on theatrewise.org come from Marquee TV, including this one. Unlimited access to these shows cost $8.99 per month or or $62.99 per year Hamilton and Me: An Actor’s Journal – Giles Terara Click here to watch video Giles Terara can do anything. He won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his masterly playing of Aaron Burr in the first London cast of Hamilton. He has played leading roles at the National Theatre, in the West End, in Ibsen, Shakespeare, and, as he demonstrated in Hamilton, he can sing, too. He’s done cabaret, and written a song cycle, Black Matter, composed while he observed life on the changing streets of his neighbourhood, London’s Soho, over the first lockdown summer. Click on the link to hear a song from Black Matter . He’s a good writer, too. He’s written a play for the Bristol Old Vic, premiering next month, about the slave trade. And now he’s written a book about his experiences while preparing and rehearsing for his role in Hamilton. This isn’t an ‘And then I met…’ star memoir, which it could easily have been. Instead, it’s an actor’s handbook, similar in style and content to Antony Sher’s Year of the King, which tells the process of finding his way into the character of Aaron Burr, without being overwhelmed by him. It should be required reading for every student actor who thinks he knows it all already, but also for every theatre lover who wants to understand more about what it’s like to be an actor, the techniques you need to master, the fortitude and flexibility it requires, and the sheer hard work that goes into making a role your own. If you love musicals, especially if you’ve seen and loved Hamilton, then Hamilton and Me: An Actor’s Journal, is for you. Together Apart Click here to watch Together Apart is a collection of ten, seven-minute musicals all about connecting on Zoom at the beginning of the pandemic. Composed, directed by, and starring an Award-winning cast including Julie Bowen, Josh Hamilton, Ann Harada, JoBeth Williams, Lisa Loeb and more. The cast of Together Apart suggests donations to The Actors Fund in lieu of ticket sales. Through Aug 20 Free Caravaggio – National Gallery of Art Click here to watch The National Gallery’s Curator of Later Italian, Spanish, and French 17th-century Paintings, the wonderfully knowledgeable Letizia Treves, guides us through the tumultuous life of Caravaggio. In this fascinating talk, she looks at how his innovative style developed from a focus on nature and expression in his early works to the sophistication of his mature works. Life Encounters – Archie Burnett – Jacob’s Pillow Click here to register Life Encounters invites audiences to witness the evolution of New York City underground dance histories by way of Archie Burnett’s personal memories. Burnett, founder of the New York-based House of Ninja, directs this Jacob’s Pillow residency from long nights spent at NYC’s iconic underground dance party The Loft to developing kinships with the Hustle, Waacking, Vogue, and post-modern dance communities. A leading figure in the social and street dance scene for over 45 years, Burnett co-directed the Street & Club Dances program at The School at Jacob’s Pillow last summer, and has performed at Danspace, 92nd Street Y, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He and his dynamic cast of guest artists—Abdiel, Princess Lockeroo, Ephrat Asherie, and more—embody the adage that there is nothing quite like a life well-danced. Aug 12-26 Dido’s Lament – Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Click here for tickets I love this very peculiar short film, directed by Zen Grisdale, which sets Purcell’s Dido’s Lament, sung by the exceptional young mezzo, Helen Charlston, and played by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, against a background of contemporary London, in reverse. It’s a remake of Coldplay's hit music video 'The Scientist directed by Jamie Thraves. Confused by my explanation? Never mind, it will make sense when you click on it. Allons Enfants! - Jean Brassard and Steve Ross Click here for tickets Steve Ross and Jean Brassard celebrate the French Spirit with this Fête Musicale. Here are songs from both sides of the Atlantic in what started as a musical fête for Bastille Day (July 14), now behind us, but their joint cabaret has proved so popular that it’s available again for our Gallic pleasure. With special guest appearances by Karen Akers and Stephanie Biddle. Aug 10-25 $20 George M.
