The Deep Blue Sea – National Theatre Click here for tickets Terence Rattigan was the most important playwright of the middle of the 20th century, having written and had successful productions of more than 20 plays, many of which are regularly revived. He wrote about middle class British life, the milieu he knew best. His dominance of the West End came to an end with the arrival of John Osborne and Angry Young Men plays in the late 50s. At one time he had three dramas running concurrently in the West End. This, The Deep Blue Sea, from 1952, is one of my favourites. When we meet her, Hester Collyer has given up everything including her marriage to a High Court judge, for a passionate affair with the feckless Freddie, a WW2 flying ace. She has left her comfortable home to live with him in a sordid rooming house and, when she realises that Freddie has tired of her, she tries, unsuccessfully, to take her own life. This is a play about sexual passion, romantic love and unequal expectations. In one of the most dramatic roles ever written for a middle-aged woman, Hester is here played by the late Helen McCrory. Her lover is Tom Burke. The original cast was Peggy Ashcroft and Kenneth More. Helen McCrory, who died last month of cancer, aged only 52, wasn’t only one of the finest actors on the London stage. She excelled in leading roles of all kinds from Greek drama – her Medea was one of the finest I ever saw – to popular television – she was the only major female character holding the preposterous Peaky Blinders together. And she was a thoroughly nice woman, adoring mother of two kids, and adored wife to actor Damian Lewis. It is not only the London theatre that will miss her. You can buy access to a individual play or an annual subscription to the National Theatre’s At Home website. The three day rental is £7.99. Black is the Color of My Voice Click here for tickets Fringe First award winner Apphia Campbell stars in her own prize-winning play that has played sell-out seasons in Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and in London’s West End. Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, Campbell’s solo performance follows a successful jazz singer and civil rights activist seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father. She reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Directed by Arran Hawkins & Nate Jacobs. Streamed July 8 - July 11 at 7.30pm BST and will then be available on demand: July 12 - 18. £15+£3 Park Bench – Park Theatre Click here for tickets Park Bench is an innovative digital-cum-live-theatre play by Tori Allen-Martin. This hybrid was commissioned by Park Theatre during lockdown with the concept of creating a piece of drama that audiences follow from a digital first act online to a live second act on the stage at Park200 Theatre. I don’t know what to expect but it sounds like an interesting concept. Some conversations are just better had face-to-face. Liv and Theo know that. They used to be each other's ride-or-die but that was back then… After more than a year of distance from their relationship, it’s time to talk - so they reconnect online. What happened to being mates? How’s his new life working out? Why did she just vanish? These are big questions for small screens. Will meeting up in person on ‘their’ park bench reignite an old flame or finally put out the flickering embers of feelings? As I understand it, you can watch the first half online and then visit the theatre for the live Act 2 sections at a later date. Act 1 is Digital, Act 2 is Live. Act 1: Digital is directed by Christa Harris and stars Tori Allen-Martin and Tim Bowie, and Act 2: Live is co-directed by Sarah Henley & Timothy O'Hara. Digital (Act 1) 22 Jun - 14 Aug Live Play (Act 2) 04 - 14 Aug £10 Upādāna: An Offering - Nrityagram Dance Ensemble – Jacob’s Pillow Click here for tickets If you don’t know about Jacob’s Pillow you’re missing an idyllic arts spot. Tucked into the Berkshire Hills in Massachusetts is a perfect place to watch dance. Earlier this year a disastrous fire destroyed one of their performance spaces but they vowed to rebuild and keep going. They have a number of online events while they’re working on their live theatre and here is one of them. Travel to a lush ten-acre village of dance on the outskirts of Bangalore to see a Pillow-exclusive virtual performance by the internationally renowned Indian classical dance company, Nrityagram Dance Ensemble. India’s first modern Gurukul, Nrityagram is a one-of-a-kind community where dance is a way of life, founded by Protiima Bedi in 1990. Today, it is home to the internationally renowned Indian classical dance ensemble. Hailed by The New York Times as having “among the world’s greatest dancers,” Upādāna: An Offering will give audiences access to the company and their Nrityagram Dance Village like never before. The Odissi dance company performs works choreographed by Surupa Sen and set to a score by Pt. Raghunath Panigrahi. Ancient wisdom, sacred rituals, and divine transformation are unveiled and interpreted by electrifying dance. Sen will also lead audiences in a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Nrityagram Dance Village, home to Nrityagram that has inspired global audiences for over 30 years. On-Demand July 8-22 $15 The Dumb Waiter – Harold Pinter Click here for tickets The actors’ names may not mean much to you on first hearing but I promise you’ll recognise them as soon as you see them from their many and distinguished television and film roles. These two, Daniel Mays and David Thewlis, are serious and important actors or they wouldn’t be starring at the Old Vic in Harold Pinter’s darkly funny, insidiously menacing The Dumb Waiter in their globally live streamed series, OLD VIC: IN CAMERA. Ben and Gus are seasoned hitmen awaiting details of their next target in the basement of a supposedly abandoned cafe. When the dumbwaiter begins sending them mysterious food orders, the killers’ waiting game starts to unravel. Stream July 7-12 £10 British Ballet Charity Gala Click here for tickets For the very first time, dancers from all eight of Britain’s main ballet companies – Ballet Black, Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, New Adventures, Northern Ballet, Rambert, Scottish Ballet and The Royal Ballet – perform pieces from their repertoire on the same stage. It’s only bits and pieces, to be sure, but definitely worth dipping into for a glimpse at some of the other dance companies in Britain with which we are less familiar. It’s a fundraising gala hosted by former Royal Ballet Principal Darcey Bussell and television presenter Ore Oduba to raise awareness of, and funds for, British ballet, and a celebration of the artform. This is a great chance to appreciate the breadth of British dance with repertoire highlights. The funds raised from the live performance and the online stream will be shared between the participating companies and a number of other dance-based companies and charities. With small donations being made to three other contributing charities, the Gala will benefit a total of 19 charities. The On Demand film of the Gala performance is available to stream in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States only so, sadly, regular readers in the Far East and other parts of the world won’t be able to see it. For the rest of us, it will remain online until 18 July and you will be able to watch the performance as many times as you choose until it expires on 18 July. £20 You Are Here – Southwark Playhouse Click here for tickets Wendi Peters stars in You Are Here, the UK premiere of an intimate, hilarious and heart-breaking tour-de-force musical about the resilience of the human spirit. This production was filmed live at London’s Southwark Playhouse. It’s July 20, 1969, the night of the moon landing. Chicago housewife Diana (Wendi Peters) walks out of her comfortable suburban life for no real reason. She sees the astronauts taking that great step and is struck by the realisation that some people lead exciting lives. Suddenly alone in a fast-changing world, she finds a series of unexpected encounters can turn one small step into a giant, life-changing leap. June 13-July 14. £12 +£3 transaction fee.
