Swan Lake – Various Click here for tickets MarqueeTV, one of my go-to websites for arts programmes, is having a blitz on Swan Lake, that most familiar of classical ballets, by making available the many and various versions from the world’s ballet companies, including a few less well-known efforts. Swan Lake is perhaps the most beloved and widely performed ballet in the world. The story, the music, and the choreography are complex and rich - proving to be an endless source of inspiration for performers and creators alike. This collection brings together classical and contemporary interpretations of the ballet as well as the score. Featuring performances from the Bolshoi Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, Zurich Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the straightforward familiar renditions, there are a number of fascinating offshoots, films which document the mounting of a new production, films which use the traditional Swan Lake as a jumping off point to make their own ballets, even a fascinating interview with the Russian conductor, Vladimir Jurowski of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, about Tchaikowsky and his intentions for Swan Lake. Star choreographers Hofesh Shechter, Cayetano Soto and Andras Morell have each created their own version for Theaterhaus Stuttgart. The result is three 20 minute long performances as diverse as their choreographers. Several of these Swan Lakes are pretty out there, including Ethadam’s rendition where the codes of classical ballet are mixed with breakdance and hip hop techniques on electro beats and the original music, while the Norwegian National Ballet is joined by actors, musicians, a soprano and 1,000 rubber ducks in their performance. I’ve given you just the overall link to the entire series so that you can make your own choices from among the 12 different programmes included in this set. An Inconvenient Black History of British Musical Theatre - Wigmore Hall Click here to watch I’m not sure I would have survived the pandemic without the livestreams and online concerts from Wigmore Hall. Several times a week during the past 18 months, despairing of ever again hearing a live concert in a real concert hall, I tuned into this miracle venue’s website and listened to something, often something wonderful. I always clicked on the Donate button, and gave them whatever I thought I could afford that day, even though the Hall offered the music free, just to ensure that the musicians were paid a bit and the Hall continued to make the concerts available. They still do. A vast eclectic panoply of music and occasional conversation is available which range from Andras Schiff playing Schubert sonatas, to Jane Glover discussing Mozart with Simon Callow, to an unknown string quartet playing a brand new contemporary composition by a young composer. When I have a free evening, I always check what’s available from Wigmore Hall and I recommend you do the same because there are so many possibilities. The conventional wisdom is that it’s all traditional 18th and 19th century chamber music and, while there’s plenty of that, there are many other presentations that are very far from that. This is one of the evenings that makes Wigmore Hall different. This concert celebrates the heritage and importance of Black music and performance to Wigmore Hall and the wider British musical theatre. This concert is also a book launch for An Inconvenient Black History of British Musical Theatre 1900-1950 by Sean Mayes and Sarah Whitfield. In a hybrid concert and discussion, Mayes and Whitfield discuss the hidden history their book uncovers, the urgency of uncovering the work of Black creative practitioners, and what it means for the future. West End performer Jonathan Andrew Hume and emerging soprano Esme Sears with Sean Mayes on piano, perform songs and repertoire that re-centre Black musical experience in the UK from 1900-1950. It’s a bit didactic and academic and the singing could be better, but it uncovers a world of music and song with which even musical theatre mavens like me will find unfamiliar and therefore exciting. A Streetcar Named Desire - National Theatre Live Click here to rent Each month the National Theatre’s invaluable website adds to its archive, both its own productions and some from other theatres. This month they have added the latest production of Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece. It comes from the Young Vic and stars Gillian Anderson as Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster as Stanley and Vanessa Kirby as Stella. As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. This thoughtful, modern production won’t make you forget the extraordinary fragility of Vivien Leigh nor the overwhelming sexual presence of the young Marlon Brando, but it has other worthwhile attractions. Rent for three days £7.99 Flowers in Dutch Art - Rijksmuseum Click here to watch Femke Diercks, Head of Decorative Arts at the Rijksmuseum, takes us on a breakneck five-minute tour of flowers in Dutch art, taking in paintings, silver, Delftware, inlaid wood cabinets, even a table cover, imparting breathlessly more information than it’s possible to absorb in such a short video. Beautifully filmed and flawlessly directed, I had to watch it three times even to grasp the breadth of the subject as described by Femke. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Ailey All Access Click here to watch Alvin Ailey made Cry , his most moving and evocative solo piece, on his muse, Judith Jamison, in 1971 and she continued to perform it until 1988 when she became Artistic Director of the Ailey Company. Nobody who ever saw her perform it will ever forget it and that performance is still available in various forms online. This 16-minute solo was a birthday present for Ailey’s mother and dedicated to "all black women everywhere - especially our mothers" and it has become an enduring work of American art. I believe that, along with Revelations, it is the work for which Alvin Ailey will be remembered as long as dance history survives. Here, to celebrate Cry’s 50th anniversary, is a film adaptation of it, danced by Jacqueline Green of the current Ailey Company. Oct 20 at 7pm EDT: Sugar Skull! - McCarter Theater Click here for tickets Sugar Skull! is a joyful digital theater experience that delves into the rich traditions of Día de Muertos to deepen audiences’ understanding of Mexican and Latin American culture. Oct 23-Nov 5 $10 Department Story – Belfast Festival Click here to watch Department Story is part of this year’s Belfast International Arts Festival. This new production created for both in-person and digital audiences by Big Telly Theatre’s Artistic Director Zoe Seaton and interdisciplinary artist Jack Hardiker is a heady mix of the live and the digital. A unique experience where a digital audience can collude with a physical one and be part of a real-world experience in a way that has never been done before. Department Story is a site-specific production set in empty retail units in Belfast’s City Centre which smashes together flash theatre and physical fiction in a killer spree through a department of stories, where everything returned has a tale to tell - a talking toaster, a dress with a past, accessories after the fact. this is no ordinary Department Store. Customers have choice but alongside choice comes great responsibility and before long there are decisions to be made. When the in-store shoppers end up with more than they bargained for, their fate lies with those online - but can they deliver? 20 – 31 Oct Twelfth Night - Shakespeare's Globe Click here for tickets Shakespeare did enough gender-bending for any lifetime and Twelfth Night is only one of his plays where girls are boys and vice versa. Not content with Shakespeare's gender muddles, Sean Holmes's brash and bouncy production of Twelfth Night in an American setting, boasts a crazy mixed-up gender-blind casting that we’re not supposed to notice. Malvolio, Sir Toby Belch, Fabian and Feste are all played by female actors and I’m relieved to report that Olivia and Viola are too, otherwise I’d be so confused I wouldn’t be able to recognise the play. We've just got one chance to unravel it all. Livestream on Oct 23 7pm BST £10 + £2.50 transaction charge
